LEED Buildings in Mexico

According to an IDB report, the construction sector aims to build 230 billion square meters of new buildings around the world over the next 40 years, which would mean an increase in global CO₂ emissions due to energy consumption. So, a strategy to help address these climate challenges would be the green buildings, well, among its benefits is the reduce operating costs, preserve natural resources, increase resilience to Climate Change, increase productivity, improve well-being and comfort, mitigate or eliminate GHG, affirm national goals and be more attractive in the real estate market.

Only a guarantee is needed to ensure that the characteristics of a green building are being met. These systems already exist and are the sustainable certifications like LEED. Other recognized certifications include: EDGE, WELL, FITWELL.

LEED-certified buildings around the world

Since its creation in 1998, LEED certification has been applied to thousands of projects around the world. Some of the most iconic buildings that have obtained this certification are:

  • The Taipei 101 in Taiwan
  • The Burj Khalifa in Dubai
  • The One World Trade Center in New York.

In total, there are more than 100,000 projects around the world that have received LEED certification.

LEED certified buildings in Monterrey

In the city of Monterrey, Mexico, there are several buildings that have been certified by LEED. Among them are:

  • The Axtel office building
  • The Heineken production plant
  • The Esfera City Center shopping center.

These buildings have been recognized for their energy efficiency, use of recycled materials and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

In Mexico, there are more than 400 buildings that have been certified by LEED. Some of the most important buildings include:

  • The Torre Mayor building in Mexico City, which was the first skyscraper to obtain LEED Platinum certification in Latin America
  • The Torre Reforma building in Mexico City, which has been recognized as the tallest building in Latin America with LEED Platinum certification.
  • BBVA Bancomer's new headquarters in Mexico City
  • The Santa Fe Corporate space in Mexico City.

In Culiacán, the capital of the state of Sinaloa in Mexico, there are several buildings that have obtained LEED certification. Among them are:

  • The Coppet CAT Andrade corporate
  • The Estela Corporate Center.

In Mexico, there are more than 509 buildings that have obtained this certification, reflecting the country's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. Importantly, LEED certification not only benefits the environment, but it can also generate significant savings in energy and water costs for owners and occupants of certified buildings.

Who grants the LEED certificate in Mexico?

The United States Sustainable Building Council (USGBC) grants the LEED certification in Mexico, as well as in other countries. In Mexico, the USGBC works in collaboration with the Green Building Council Mexico (GBCM), a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable construction in the country.
