Resilient Architecture

In the dynamic world of sustainable construction, the combination of resilient architecture with renowned certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and EDGE (Design Excellence for Greater Efficiencies) emerges as a strategic need. On this journey, we explore tactical perspectives that reveal the connection between resilience and sustainability.

Fundamental Principles of Resilient Architecture

  • Sustainability: It addresses the integration of sustainable practices as a fundamental principle of resilience.
  • Adaptability: It highlights the importance of designs that can evolve and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Redundancy: It explores the concept of redundancy in the construction of critical systems, ensuring functionality even under stressful conditions.
  • Community Involvement: It analyzes the role of involving communities in the design process to create structures that meet their needs and foster a sense of belonging.

In confronting climate challenges, resilient architecture, guided by LEED and EDGE, stands as a technical strategy. These include the following:

  • Weather resistant design
  • Energy efficient systems
  • Adaptable infrastructure that responds to the constantly changing environmental environment.

Leaf Latam Case Studies

LEED - Starbucks Coffee Patio Panorama

A LEED-certified project exemplifies tactical resilience through design choices, material selection and energy strategies. In the case of Starbucks, they have these design choices:

  • Energy savings, allowing air-conditioned stores to reach 24°C, instead of 22°C, on hot days.
  • Save water by using high-pressure nozzles to clean the jugs instead of running tap water.
  • Installation of flow reduction valves throughout the premises.
  • Installation of cabinets made of materials made from 90% recycled industrial materials (if any) without the addition of formaldehyde.
  • Improved lighting efficiency.
  • Use of recycled tiles.
  • Use of paints with less amount of volatile organic chemicals.

EDGE - Real Plaza Puruchuco

An EDGE certified project stands out with tactical prowess in resource efficiency and adaptive design, showing tangible results. It is a shopping center located in Ate on a plot of 117,964.60 m2. The project has 5 levels in its largest anchor tent and in the rest of the project, it varies between 2 and 3 levels. It has a basement dedicated to parking and mechanical rooms.

It was also achieved 21% in energy savings, 47% in saving water and 71% less energy incorporated into materials.

Technology Integration for Resilience

The infusion of technology further enhances resilience in sustainable construction. Incorporate intelligent building technologies, IoT and data analysis becomes a technical imperative to optimize energy use and respond dynamically to changing conditions.

In the search for future-proofing in sustainable construction projects, tactical innovation becomes essential. Exploring emerging technologies, materials and design approaches aligns with resilience and certification standards, ensuring that projects stand the test of time.

Overcoming Technical Challenges

Recognizing and overcoming challenges when certifying is crucial. Navigating certification requirements, addressing cost concerns, and encouraging community participation are strategic and technical solutions for successful integration.

At Leaf Latam, we accompany you in this process, to achieve zero or minimum cost overruns and we guide you with the best personalized technique for your project in order to achieve the goal certification.
